19 letterbooks (1846-77) and 9 account books (both journals and ledgers, 1844-77) kept by Supply C. Thwing, a prominent commission merchant and shipowner of Boston, Mass. The letterbooks contain letterpress copies of outgoing business correspondence of Thwing's and of his firm Supply C. Thwing and Co. and include accounts current. Thwing's business interests were primarily in intercoastal shipping, particularly in coal, with agents in New Orleans, Portsmouth, N.H., and Philadelphia, although he corresponded with agents and merchants elsewhere, including Liverpool, and with captains of his various ships. Among his correspondents were Peter Marcy (New Orleans), Judah Touro (New Orleans), Daniel Marcy (Portsmouth), Thomas Haven (Philadelphia), and R.D. Shepherd (Shepherdstown, W. Va.).

Judah Touro (June 16, 1775 – January 18, 1854) was an American businessman and philanthropist. Touro's father Isaac Touro was the leader of the Newport, R.I. Jewish Community. After his father's death, Judah and his siblings were raised by his uncle, a merchant who helped found Boston's first bank.
