Papers documenting farming and family life in Orangeburg District, S.C., during antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction, and late 19th century periods. Unbound papers consisting of reminiscences of Civil War, 37 tax receipts, 1866-1906, biographical sketch, and diary; together with unbound volume, 1 Jan. - 6 Sept. 1877, 1 Jan. - 7 Feb., and 1 July - 7 Oct. 1878, Rocky Grove Township, Orangeburg County, farm journal re planting cotton, corn, millet, and grain, hauling logs to a lumber mill, slaughtering hogs, attending meetings of the Grange, the Temperance Society, and church, and various social activities. Topics discussed include typical concerns associated with farming: weather conditions, planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops; records of exchanges of labor, tools, and use of farm animals; a receipt of John Phillips from 1866 to John Gardner for repair on ploughs; hauling building materials and collecting funds for a new church at Pine Grove. Also including typed copy of memoir, War Reminiscences, written by Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips, re plantation life on the home front during the Civil War, including her marriage to Mr. Phillips while on furlough two weeks before Sherman's arrival in the area.
