Volume, 1758, inscribed copy of the Commentaries upon the Aphorisms of Dr. Herman Boerhaave, vol. VII, London, a medical text bearing an inscription "In nothing do men more nearly approach the Gods than in giving health to men" [this item located offsite at annex]. Volume, 1846-1847, 1880-1882, of records kept by LaBorde as physician and farmer; one page account, Oct. 1846-Mar. 1847, of "Servants hired for [S.C. College] Commons Hall," listing 18 male and female African American slaves by name with dates of service; 1880s entries list rent received, medical accounts, medicines purchased, notes drawn, etc. [with exception of page containing 1846-1847 entry, all earlier pages removed from volume when recycled for use in 1880 for accounts]. Volume, 1862-1877, medical account book and farm journal including accounts for treatment of neighbors, including African-American slaves and freedmen; notes on treatments and prescriptions for various illnesses and injuries; stock and dairy records of butter and milk production, with list of cows ("Dixie," "Lost Cause," and "Ku Klux," etc.); entries re planting of cotton, corn, sorghum, potatoes, and melons; and detailed entries re farming practices, including methods of planting various crops and syrup making.
