Chiefly papers of planter Henry Edmundson (1774-1847) of "Fotheringay," Montgomery County, Va., including correspondence, 1803-1847, account book, 1798-1847 (including accounts for the Alleghany Turnpike Company, of which he was an owner), loose accounts, 1805-1847, and miscellaneous legal papers, 1799-1846 (including estate papers of Alexander Hart Robertson [d. 1823] of Montgomery County). Also included are correspondence, 1797-1826, and accounts, 1809- 1824, of John Preston (1764-1827) of Botetourt County, Va., who served as Treasurer of Virginia, and legal documents, 1796-1828, resulting from a lawsuit over his administration; correspondence, 1852-1893, account books, 1849-1869, loose accounts, 1849-1897, and other papers of David Edmundson (1829-1893) of "Fotheringay" and while serving in Company B, 4th Virginia Infantry, and the 21st Virginia Cavalry; and correspondence, accounts, and legal papers, 1847-1875, of the firm of Wm. R. and David Edmundson, Shawsville, Montgomery County, concerning the operation of a general store. Among the miscellaneous items in the collection are an account book, 1807-1809, for Christiansburg Tavern, Montgomery County, and an account book, 1838, for a general store and iron works at Catawba Furnace, Botetourt County.

His sons were John Preston (1764-1827), who was a member of the Virginia General Assembly and treasurer of Virginia, and Francis Preston (1765-1836).
