Consisting primarily of Civil War letters written by brothers in the South Carolina Volunteers: Pvt. James Irvin Willis (1836-1908), Co. C and Co. H, 16th Regiment; 2nd Lt. Marcus McKibben Willis (d. 1864), Co. E, 13th Regiment; Sgt. John Javin Willis (1841-1864), Co. E, 13th Regiment; and Pvt. Erastus Rowley Willis (1843-1865), Co. A., 3rd Regiment; the letters were written chiefly from various Confederate camps and battlefields in South Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and addressed to family members at home in Spartanburg District, S.C. Contains specimen letters of father Daniel Willis (1810-1887) and Martha Jane Styles Willis (1838-1899), wife of John Irvin Willis, and letter, 29 June 1857, Greenville District, D[aniel] Webster Holland, to John Irvin Willis, alluding to Willis' employment as a music teacher at singing schools. Includes 5 letters, 18 Dec. 1862 through 2 Jan 1865, from camps near Fredericksburg, Orange Court House, and Richmond [Va.], Erastus Rowley Willis, to Daniel Willis, discussing the aftermath of the battle of Fredericksburg, a visit to the Chancellorsville battlefield to retrieve ordinance stores, Confedrate attempts to regroup following defeat at Gettysburg, a religious revival sweeping through the army, and Erastus' oppostition to the impressment of Negroes into the Confederate army. Also includes letter, 28 June [18]63, near Chambersburg, Pa., John Javin Willis to [Daniel Willis], re the Confederate march northward through Maryland and Pennsylvania, attempts to recruit Confederate sympathizers and encounters with abolitionsists and secessionists in the region; and undated letter fragment from James Irvin Willis re leisure activity in camp, including a circulating library, Sunday school, and singing school.
