Walter Eliot Thwing papers, 1827-1924.

Diaries, correspondence, ships' logs, notes, and multiple drafts of two apparently unpublished works by Thwing, "My Travels" and "The Thwing Fleet." Diaries dating from 1867 and 69 were kept as a student in Roxbury, Mass. and at Harvard (nongrad. 1872). Diaries, an expense book, and letters written between Thwing and his father, Supply Clap Thwing, a Boston shipowner and merchant, detail Walter's trip around the world, including around Cape Horn, to San Francisco, the Orient, India, Egypt, and Europe, 1871-72. Original manuscripts, diary extracts, and typewritten drafts cover Thwing's journeys around the world (1871-72), to Jamaica (1878), Bermuda (1895, 1923), England (1903, 08), New Orleans (1912, 17, 19, 21), and other locations domestically. Original and copies of ships' logs cover voyages of the Unicorn (1837) and the Daniel Marcy (1868-72). (Cont'd) "The Thwing Fleet" (formerly called "Ships and Shipping") is a history of Supply C. Thwing's fleet of ships, including detailed information on individual vessels and biographical information on Thwing and his partners. The collection also contains Supply C. Thwing's letterbook (1843-45) and a few of his business papers; research notes on Boston's India Wharf; and two scrapbooks (1869-94, 1875-1928).
