Description: Miscellaneous documents from the Department of Urban Affairs dating from 1956-1984. Although the Department of Urban Affairs was not established until 1963, the collection includes documents from the Urban Research Committee's proposals for an urban studies program (1956), and an outline of a proposed 5-10 year urban studies department program (1958). Also included are course proposals within the History Department (1961) and proposals for a graduate program in urban studies (1959-1962). A large portion of the collection is comprised of records regarding the Ford Foundation which awarded a research grant in December 1959. The collection also contains correspondence from the College of Letters & Science to department chairmen Bloomberg, Rose and Schmandt (1967-1974), the Ford Foundation (1959-1961), and other various departments and committees. Documents pertain to the proposal for a department and program for undergraduates (1961-1970), a doctoral degree program (1972-1973), a joint degree program with the School of Education (1970), and a Master's of Public Administration program (1979-1980). Also included are minutes from the Department of Urban Affairs (1963-1982) which consist of various memos and announcements relating to courses, staffing, budgets and other departmental functions. The collection also contains program brochures (1978-1980), several issues of the "Intrapost" (1961), "Urban Affair" newspaper (1968-1975) and "USI News" (1980-1981).
