Correspondence, notes, writings, and other materials relating to Wilgus's work as a folklorist particularly interested in music. Included are extensive research files documenting his work on ballads, including Child ballads and Native American ballads; materials relating to his academic career, particularly his tenure at UCLA, and to the folk festivals and seminars on folklore that he administered at UCLA in the 1960s and 1970s; and photocopies and offprints of the many journal articles and book reviews that he and his colleagues produced for various folklore publications. Also included are lecture notes and syllabi for courses, particularly those he gave at UCLA on the ballad form.

D.K. (Donald Knight) Wilgus was born on 1 December 1918, in Mansfield, Ohio. He attended the Ohio State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1941, a Master of Arts in 1947, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1954. Wilgus spent most of his career teaching in the Center for the Study of Comparative Folklore and Mythology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
