Wilterdink served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army Air Force from 1945-1949. He graduated from Hope College in 1952 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1955. He received both a masters degree and a Ph. D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School. In 1968 he joined the faculty of Western Theological Seminary where he served as director of field education, secretary of faculty, and president of the Particular Synod of Michigan (1970-1971).
