Schoon graduated from Hope College in 1915 and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1922. During that same year he was licensed and ordained by the Reformed Church in America. He taught at the Pleasant Prairie Academy from 1915-1917 and from 1922-1924. He was principal of that institution from 1924-1946. From 1946-1954 he was a professor of German at Hope College.
