Nettinga graduated from Hope College in 1900 and from Western Theological Seminary in 1903. He was licensed and ordained by the Reformed Church in America in 1903. Nettinga held several pastorates before becoming a professor at Western Theological Seminary in 1918. In 1930 Nettinga became president of the seminary and held that position until his death in 1938.
