Papers, 1856-1889 (bulk 1861-1862).

The collection contains correspondence and legal and government documents. The bulk of the collection is Civil War correspondence between sons Warren, Wayne, and Lafayette Alford, and family at home. Topics include fighting at the front, tactical information, morale, and living conditions. Also, the family was very religious, and religious expressions are frequent in the letters of Warren and Franklin Alford. Other topics include family efforts to gain government compensation after the sons' deaths in 1862 and the treatment of Elizabeth Kellams' mental illness. Also included is correspondence of Franklin Alford with his surviving children Helen, George W., and Thomas Green. Three oversized items include an 1860 land deed; Warren Alford's 1862 appointment to corporal; and an 1862 affidavit to secure Wayne Alford's back pay. Items stored in artifacts include a cartridge belt with an "Excelsior" buckle; a brass powder flask; and a wooden box.
