Frederick Eugene Farnsworth was prominent in the civic and financial life of Detroit. Frederick E. Farnsworth was born in Detroit on Dec. 2, 1852. He began in the boot and shoe business with his father, and later worked as a cashier of Union National Bank, Detroit, 1898-1903; manager of Portland Cement Company at Marlborough, Mich., 1903-1907; general secretary of American Bankers' Association, 1907-1919; and city assessor of Detroit, 1891-1897. Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838. Public Act 147 of 1846 completely re-organized the state militia. Public Act 198 of 1893 officially designated the militia as the Michigan National Guard.
