The collection includes letters, 1794, to Richard Archer discussing national politics; numerous accounts, 1795-1821, of Peter Field Archer and James Powell Cocke, trustees for the estate of Richard Archer, dealing with plantation operations and board and educational expenses for Richard Thompson Archer; and correspondence of James Powell Cocke concerning the estate and a variety of supporting land records; and accounts, 1809-1843, land records, and will, 1841, of Mary Chastain (Cocke) Archer dealing with real and slave property in Amelia and Cumberland counties, Va. Also includes accounts and correspondence, 1815-1865, of Richard Thompson Archer concerning farm machinery and wheat, typhoid fever among the plantation hands, and the Civil War battle of White Oak Swamp near Richmond, 1862, a broadside discussing the Missouri Compromise and the rejection of Texas' application to the Union; and letters of Edward S. Archer to Elizabeth Barnes Archer anout Anchuca plantation in Claiborne County, Miss., and the University of Virginia.
