Papers of Allen Taylor Caperton include correspondence, 1839- 1876, with family members in Monroe County, Va. (now W. Va.) and Lynchburg, Va. Papers of William Gaston Caperton include correspondence, 1841-1852, with family and friends in Logan County, Va. (now W. Va.), New Orleans, La., Texas, and California; and legal papers and accounts, 1840- 1851, pertaining to his law practice. Papers of George Henry Caperton include diary extracts, 1861-1862, and other materials, 1861-1865, concerning his service in the Confederate States Army of the Potomac; his family correspondence, 1847-1881; and accounts, 1843-1894, kept in Petersburg, Va., and Monroe County. Papers of William Alexander Gordon consist primarily of correspondence, 1906-1919, concerning the Caperton family and his book, The Killing of Adam Caperton by Indians (1918). Also included with the collection are miscellaneous family papers, newspaper clippings, and genealogical notes.
