The collection includes correspondence, 1789-1819 (in part, concerning mail routes between Washington, D.C., and Petersburg, Va.), account books and loose accounts (in part, concerning the operation of a stage line between Fredericksburg and Richmond, Va.), deeds and legal records, and estate materials of John George Woolfolk (1750-1819) of "Shepherd's Hill," Caroline County, Va. Also, includes Woolfolk's records as executor of the estate of John Hoomes of Caroline County. Also, includes business and personal correspondence, 1825-1868 (concerning agricultural operations, the stage and mail lines between Fredericksburg and Richmond, and family members at Bethany College, Bethany, Va. [now W. Va.]), accounts, account books, and estate records of Jourdon Woolfolk (1796-1868) of "Mulberry Place," Caroline County, Va.; and records of his trusteeship on behalf of Mary Elizabeth Woolfolk. Also, includes correspondence, 1863-1890, accounts, business and agricultural records, and legal records concerning ownership of "Mulberry Place," Caroline County, Va., of John William Woolfolk (1823-1891). Also, includes miscellaneous papers and estate records of Edmund Winston of Hanover County, Va.; records concerning the education of young women in nineteenth-century Virginia; and miscellaneous materials concerning the Potomac Steamboat Company.

The Woolfolk family originally emigrated from Wales. John George Woolfolk (1750-1819) ran a stage line and had a contract to carry the mail. His sons Pichegru Woolfolk and Jourdan Woolfolk continued the stage line. Jourdan had a son, John William Woolfolk, among other children.
