The collection consists chiefly of letters of Woods and his family relating to his service in the War of 1812, the convention that nominated Henry Clay for president, and family matters from 1767-1863. Correspondence includes letters from John Stuart to his sister Elizabeth Stuart Woods, 1782-1796, to his brother-in-law, Richard Woods, 1788-1794, and to his nephew, William Woods, 1804. Also, includes letters from Eliza Ann Warwick Woods to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Warwick, 1801-1815; letters from William Woods to his wife, Eliza Ann Warwick, 1811-1815, concerning the War of 1812 and camp life, and her letters to him, 1814-1815; letters from Woods to his wife, 1823-1831, and from her to him, 1829-1830, concerning the condition of the plantation, slaves, and national politics. There are also letters and agreements to William Woods concerning land owned by him in Kentucky, 1795-1848. Also, includes diaries of a trip in western Virginia, 1795, and to Philadelphia, 1799-1800. Liberty Hall Academy ephemera includes a letter praising William Woods's conduct as a student and a copy of the "Laws of Liberty Hall Academy," ca. 1794- 1795. Also, includes Woods's commission as lieutenant in the Virginia militia, 1800, and his will dated 1847, recorded 1850.
