Theodore Romeyn Beck served in the Civil War as a chaplain to a division of the New Jersey Volunteers from 1862-1864. In 1864 he was appointed as professor at Hope College. He taught a variety of courses in classics and religion until he resigned in 1885. From 1888-1894, Beck served as a missionary in Japan. He founded a college there based on the American system.
