John Henry McCray papers, 1929-1989.

Papers, correspondence and photographs reflecting McCray's involvement with the Lighthouse and Informer and other newspapers as editor, columnist, distributor, and activist. Also including papers re his work with the Progressive Democratic party which he helped to found in 1944, and his efforts to register black voters; his indictment and libel trial, 1950, Greenwood County, S.C., for criminal slander in an article on the execution of Willie Tolbert, Jr.; as well as his coverage of lynchings, other racial incidents, and the NAACP. Also includes personal, family, and financial papers; and photographic prints and negatives, arranged topically, including athletics, Allen University activities, McCray and his family, and voter registration.
