Thayer family papers, 1783-1953.

Papers of the interrelated Pierce and Thayer families. Papers relating to the Pierce family of Weymouth, Mass. include deeds to and from Charles and his son Elijah for lands in Milton, Quincy, and Weymouth, Mass. and a few business papers and a partially obscured account book (1821-23) kept by Elijah, a harness maker in Weymouth. The largest part of the collection documents the Civil War service of Elliot C. Pierce of Weymouth, an officer in the 13th Mass. Infantry from 1861-64. Letters to his family and fiancee, Mary Ellen Baker, describe service in Md. and Va.; the occupation of Winchester, Va. by Union troops; and engagements at 2nd Bull Run where he was wounded, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. Pierce also served on detached duty from the 13th as Chief of the 1st Ambulance Corps from 1863 - Apr. 1864. The papers also include commissions, ordnance stores, muster rolls, returns, two scrapbooks of clippings (1861-62, one partially obscuring the pagesof Elijah's account book), and Pierce's diary kept from 1863-64. Elliot Pierce's papers also document his involvement in veterans' organizations and reunions after the war. (Cont'd) Also included are journals kept by Elliot's wife Mary from 1861-65, including a small journal kept on a visit to Elliot and the troops at Culpepper, Va., from 7 Jan. - 4 Apr. 1864. Thayer family papers include letters from William W. Thayer of Kansas City to his fiancee Maria Conwell regarding marriage plans and personal business. Additional family papers include those of Ashford Baker, a builder in Weymouth; a diary kept by William H. Baker as a student in Weymouth and at Harvard (1861); a diary kept sporadically in 1861 in Weymouth by Hannah F. Pierce; memoranda of accounts kept by Eliza Pierce in 1815; and a family scrapbook containing genealogical notes and photographs.
