The collection contains the letters and diaries of Edna Postlethwaite and photocopies of the letters of G. Edmund Stratton, her uncle. Of particular interest is the correspondence of the former with her parents, Clarence E. and Charlotte Lewis Postlewaite, while she was a student at Swarthmore College.

Edna Postlethwaite graduated from Swarthmore College in 1914, and earned a Masters degree from Columbia University. She was a teacher and was involved in many social concerns. Founded by members of Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia Yearly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Swarthmore College was incorporated in 1864 under a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The College opened in 1869 as an college and preparatory school, although the preparatory division was phased out in the 1880s.
