The Montana Board of Stock Commissioners was established in 1885 to protect the interests of cattle and horse ranchers. Ralph Miracle was born in Helena, Montana, on December 6, 1904, the son of Frank D. and Lillian Miracle. Frank Miracle was an attorney and partner in the Miracle-VanCleve Company, at Canyon Creek northwest of Helena. Ralph studied at Harvard Military School in Los Angeles, and Dartmouth College, graduating about 1926. For the next 20 years he operated several ranches in Lewis and Clark and Cascade Counties.
