Secretary's Records [1945-1961] [1945-1958]

This series comprises records of Dr. E.E. Ryden, secretary and treasurer of the Joint Commission on a Common Hymnal. They were produced throughout the course of Dr. Ryden's participation as an officer and member of the commission charged with producing a new common hymnal for the eight participating church bodies. Records are from 1945-1961 with the bulk dating from 1945-1958. While the commission finished its work with the introduction of the new service book and hymnal in 1957, Dr. Ryden continued to finish up his work with the commission and as late as 1961 was inquiring about final disbursement of the contingency funds related to the project. Record types include handwritten meeting minutes, upon which Dr. Ryden based the official typewritten minutes of the commission's meetings; handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, topical notes, progress reports, indexes, and research material related to hymn selection. Subject matter addressed in these records mainly pertains to the creation of the hymnal, which was the responsibility of this particular commission. There are a few records that pertain to liturgy, but as it was addressed by the editorial committee, which was charged with the process of bringing together the liturgy and hymnal portions that would comprise the completed service book and hymnal. The bulk of these records should be used as a complement to what are considered the official records for the two commissions, JCLH 1/1, 1/2, 2/1, and 3/1. They were Dr. Ryden's copies and in several instances fill out missing portions or contain his annotated notes which provide his insight into the process of creating a new hymnal. But Dr. Ryden's correspondence in this series is original correspondence sent to him and other correspondence on which he was copied. It should be seen as illustrating and documenting his role as secretary and treasurer of the hymnal commission.
