The collection contains a typescript paper by John H. Holliday about Daniel L. Paine, who had worked for him at the NEWS for 19 years and had recently died. The paper was written for a club and then submitted unsuccessfully for publication. Holliday comments on Paine's qualities as a person and a newspaperman, and includes two examples of Paine's verse.

John H. Holliday was born in Indianapolis. He attended Northwest Christian University (Butler) and Hanover College, and served during the Civil War with the 137th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. In 1869 he founded the Indianapolis News, and was owner and managing editor until his retirement in 1892. In 1893 he founded the Union Trust Company and served as its president until 1899.
