Consisting chiefly of public papers, primarily correspondence, relating to Blatt's role as a member of the South Carolina House from Barnwell County, 1933-1936, and Speaker, 1935-1946 and 1951-1971. Contains constitutent mail, requests for government positions, assistance in gaining college acceptance; etc. Legal papers (consisting of Sub-series: General; Client Files, 1961-1986; and Topical Files) relates to Blatt's legal practice in the firm of Blatt and Fales. Topical files relate to juror character inquiries, the dissolution of the firm of Blatt and Fales, founded in 1934 and dissolved in 1984; Voorhees College, 1976-1986; and an asbestos suit involving the schools of Greenville and Spartanburg, c.1981-1986. Other correspondents include many members of the S.C. General Assembly, other state officials and members of S.C.'s delegation to Congress, including J.K. Breedin, Edgar Brown, Richard M. Jefferies, Bruce Littlejohn, Burnet Maybank, Julius B. Ness, Thomas H. Pope, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Archibald Rutledge. Personal files include family correspondence, financial records, and papers of wife Ethel. Scrapbooks, 1936-1979, consisting of 30 bound volumes, include an undated scrapbook, My University Years, re student life at USC prior to Blatt's graduation in 1917. Also includes photographs; clippings; speeches, 1939-1984; together with the papers of Federal Judge Solomon Blatt, Jr., principally outgoing letters, 1962-1967.
