Guthrie was born in New York City in 1896, the son of Harry and Ella May Hollister Guthrie. He attended the Mount Hermon School in Northfield, Mass. from 1912 to 1915. During 1916 he worked in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in New Haven, Conn. and taught in Newfane, Vt. In 1916 he joined the 10th Connecticut Field Artillery.
