Papers : of Archibald Stuart, 1785-1817.

The collection contains letters, 1789-1790, written to Archibald Stuart of Staunton, Va., by Cuthbert Bullitt, Benjamin Harrison, Charles Hedrick, James Heron, David McNair, Joseph Moore, John Price, Alexander Stuart, and James Todd concerning his law practice and financial affairs; and accounts, 1785-1795, for the repair and construction of houses. Also includes poems written by Archibald Stuart; an order, 1787, issued by the General Court of Virginia (signed by John Brown) concerning Alexander Craig, Samuel Pilson, William Black, and John Vachub; and an account, 1791, of Alexander Stuart with Mrs. Polly Gilham. Also includes three accounts, 1817, of Christopher Stuart with William Clarke concerning the Virginia militia service of Jacob Baylor, Robert Meek, and Henry Toles.

Archibald Stuart was born near Staunton, Va. in 1757. He was educated at the College of William and Mary and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He fought at Guilford Court House and in the Yorktown Campaign. Stuart studied law under Thomas Jefferson and served in the Virginia House of Delegates.
