Papers dating chiefly 1952-1966, documenting Riley's long involvement with and leadership of the Democratic Party at local and sate levels. Organized into following series: Democratic Party of Greenville County (S.C.), 1952-1966; Democratic Party of South Carolina, 1952-1966; S.C. Bar Association, 1947-1966; American Legion Post 3 of Greenville (S.C.), 1947-1960; Personal Papers, 1923-1979; and Miscellaneous (re military service in World War II; photographs, oral history tapes, etc.). Consisting chiefly of materials documenting Riley's leaderhip role in the Democratic Party also includes materials relating to his efforts to win South Carolina for John F. Kennedy in the presidential election of 1960; his campaign work for his son, Richard W. Riley, who won the South Carolina gubernatorial race of 1978; miscellaneous materials pertaining to his law practice, his community service in the Greenville Kiwanis, Elks, and county school board; and eight audio cassettes, with transcripts, 1986-1991, oral history interview conducted by John J. Duffy and George D. Terry of the University of South Carolina.
