Chiefly Civil War letters from Neves family members in Greenville District, S.C., to brothers in Co. A (later Co. H), Third Battalion, Palmetto Light Artillery of the Confederate States Army: W.P.Z.F. Neves, a private, sergeant, and lieutenant; Pvt. John Pool Neves, bugler for Co. H; and Pvt. George Washington Neves. Includes correspondence from mother, Ann Pool Neves, and father, Alsey Albert Neves, and sisters Emily Caroline, Mary Elizabeth, Anah Frances, and Harriet Ann Neves and Martha J. Neves Waldrop; together with letters from Martha J. Neves Waldrop to her husband, Andrew Waldrop (d. 1862), also of Co. A, Third Battalion, Palmetto Light Artillery. Letters from family members at Mush Creek, S.C., discuss various aspects of homefront conditions, including farming, the production of cloth and military uniforms, work of the local Ladies Aid Society, the conscription act of May 1862 and its effect upon agricultural production, Alsey Neves's service as local commissary representative for Capt. William H. Campbell's company, and the family's participation in a salt cartel organized by A. Barrett of Mush Creek. Letters from W.P.Z.F. Neves and his brothers in the Confederate Army, addressed chiefly to their parents and sister Frances, provide details of life at Camp Walker near Summerville, S.C., coastal defenses, skirmishes near Charleston, S.C., the election of officers, formation of new companies, duties of each Neves brother, and military discipline problems. Brothers John Pool and George Washington Neves were later attached to Butler's Cavalry Horse Artillery Company, Army of Tennessee, during the Carolinas Campaign, 1864-1865. Antebellum items include accounts of Alsey A. Neves, and examples of W.P.Z.F. Neves's penmanship. Other correspondents include cousins Polly Cox, Elizabeth Pool, Caroline Pool Bailey, Emily Moon, uncle D.B. Hall, and Mush Creek postmaster W.J. Taylor.
