Letter written by Rev. Joseph Thaxter, minister of the First Parish of Edgartown (Mass.), on 26 July 1810 to Rev. John Pierce. Thaxter recounts a revival of religion in Martha's Vineyard in which he represents the attempts of one James Davis, a pretended Congregationalist in union with certain disorderly Baptists and Methodists, to overturn the regular churches on the island. Also, a postscript of 17 Aug. 1810.

John Pierce (1773-1849) was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard College in 1793. He accepted an invitation to become the pastor of the First Church in Brookline, Massachusetts, and was ordained on March 15, 1797. In 1798, he married Abigail Lovel, who died in 1800. In 1802, he married Lucy Tappan, and he and Lucy were married for 47 years and had 10 children. Pierce was the sole pastor of the First Church in Brookline for 50 years. Biographical note: Supervisor involved in inspecting and vaccinating cattle in Mexico in 1949 as a member of the Mexico-American Commission for the Eradication of Hoof and Mount Disease. Also known as the Aftosa Commission, it existed in the late 1940s to early 1950s to eradicate an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Mexico, where the disease is known as aftosa.
