Consisting chiefly of research notes for Edith M. Dabbs' historical writings about Penn School and St. Helena Island, including the books, Walking Tall (1964), Face of an Island (1970), and Sea Island Diary (1983). Most of the material in the collection pertains to her research for the latter book. Consisting of original and photocopied correspondence, newpaper clippings, and school papers relating to Penn School and persons associated with St. Helena. The collection also includes drafts of Sea Island Diary and Walking Tall; and 8 Feb. 1977 transcripts of an interview with Dabbs; 7 uncut copies of Home of the Freed (1926) by Rossa B. Cooley; and an undated photograph of Penn Community Services, Inc., leaders. Later addition contains personal correspondence, especiallycondolences on sudden death of James Dabbs in May 1970. Also research materials and photographs for Face of an Island and Sea Island Diary. Early original photographs of St. Helena and Beaufort during Union occupation by Hubbard & Mix and Blauvelt & Hubbard.

Edith Mitchell Dabbs (November 10, 1906 - 1991) was an American Civil rights activist and writer from South Carolina known for her focus on Saint Helena and Penn Center. She was married to James McBride Dabbs whom she assisted with editing. Dabbs was one of the only authors to write about Saint Helena Island during her time.
