Boush-Asher family papers, 1856-1949.

Nathaniel's papers relate to business and to the New York Life Insurance Company. There are letters from Nathaniel to his son, Samuel, during the Civil War; and letters to Samuel from relatives, including his sisters Effie and Fannie and his mother Jane, containing commentary on the Civil War. Among Samuel's papers are Confederate passes, an 1865 letter from Samuel to his mother about returning home, and correspondence from his friend Maurice Hurley writing about his exile to Canada in 1864 to avoid taking a loyalty "oath to President Lincoln." Correspondence of Nathalie Boush Asher and her husband, G. Gordon Asher, make up the remainder of the collection. Most of her correspondence are personal letters, sympathy notes, and some letters on House of Representatives stationery. Included is her report card from the Alexandria Female Institute in 1893, and newspapers relating to the candidacy of C.C. Carlin and E.B. White for the 1918 Virginia eighth district election for the U.S. House of Representatives. There is some business and personal correspondence of G. Gordon Asher.
