Papers of Richard Blow (1746-1833) include correspondence, 1785- 1832, concerning shipping and other business ventures, agriculture at Tower Hill plantation in Sussex County, Va., smallpox and yellow fever in and around Norfolk, Va., Nat Turner's insurrection in Southampton County, Va., and general political matters; accounts and letterbooks concerning shipping in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va.; and commonplace books. Papers of George Blow (1787-1870) include correspondence, 1811- 1845, about politics, education of his sons at the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary, agricultural operations at Tower Hill and at Wheatland plantation in James City County, Va., the Southampton Insurrection, and the slave trade; account books for travelling expenses between plantations and for agricultural operations at Tower Hill; military papers concerning the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia militia; and legal documents. Papers of William Nivison Blow (1856-1907) include correspondence, letterbooks, 1902-1905, and other materials concering his service with the 15th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, in California, the Philippines, and elsewhere.

Richard Blow was a native of Southampton County, Va. He was born in 1746, the son of Samuel Blow and Martha (Drew) Blow. He married Frances Wright in 1786. He owned "Tower Hill" plantation in Sussex County, Va. and was a partner in stores operated in Virginia and North Carolina. He furnished ships to trade American goods abroad. He was the first president of the Farmers Bank of Norfolk and was president of the Dismal Swamp Canal Company, Blow died in Portsmouth, Va. in 1833. He was survived by h...
