Transcript of correspondence between Martinus Steyn, President of the Orange Free State and the British High Commissioner in Cape Town, Alfred Milner. The British, who wanted access to the Transvaal gold fields, had summoned troops, ostensibly to protect the rights of British citizens in the Boer republics. After diplomatic and military maneuvering on both sides, the Transvaal issued an ultimatum on 9 Oct. which was rejected by the British, leading to war. Letters were collated 1901 Aug. 12.
