Business and legal documents comprise the bulk of this collection. Most documents pertain to acquisition of land and include instruments of conveyance, certificates of land ownership, and land deeds. Business papers consist of invoices for shipment of cotton and goods; slave bills of sale (1822-1856); receipts; and correspondence relating primarily to the sale of cotton and goods. Personal correspondence includes comments by Jefferson Davis on the "righteous cause" (Nov. 6, 1882), several letters to President Grover Cleveland endorsing a political appointment for Henry Clay Capell (March-Aug. 1893) and attesting to his high moral character (1895). Also included are letters regarding the death of Robert L. Capell who died in military service (Aug. 31, 1865, Sept. 27, 1865) and the impact of the Civil War (Jan. 9, 1866). Volumes consist of plantation diaries (1842-1867) for Pleasant Hill Plantation; plantation record books, including a cotton book (1881-1891) of Henry Clay Capell; a crop book (1840-1849); and plantation record books of other family members. Capell maintained daybooks (1881, 1886-1887) while operating a store near Rose Hill, Miss., and included in volume five are the constitution, bylaws, order of business, and list of members of the Rose Hill Agricultural and Horticultural Club (1880). Among miscellaneous items is a tintype of and unidentified man (n.d.); list of heirs to the estate of John Resse (ca. 1880); Capell family genealogy [photocopy] (n.d.); and a biography of Eli J. Capell [photocopy] which appeared in THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY HISTORICAL REVIEW (n.d.). Typescripts of plantation diary entries record inventories of slaves, live stock and equipment, daily tally of cotton picked by slaves, yearly distribution of clothing and tools to slaves, weight of cotton bales, and amount of cotton sold annually.
