Ebenezer N. (E.N.) Blake was born in Farmington, Maine in 1817. In 1839 he moved to North Woburn and was employed by the Moses Cummings leather company. From 1844-1856 Blake was associated with the J.B. Winn tannery, most of the time as partner. In 1856 he formed a partnership with Charles Tidd, founding the first tannery, Tidd and Blake, located on the Woburn Branch railroad at Horn Pond. The route for the Boston and Lowell Railroad was surveyed in 1829; one year later the Massachusetts Legislature granted approval for the project.
