The collection consists of a letter from Varina Howell Davis to Miss Eleanor B. Tschudi dated January 21, 1888. The letter is regarding a lock of Jefferson Davis' hair that Miss Tschudi has requested. Mrs. Davis comments on Jefferson Davis' health, speaks with pleasure of the visit to Athens by the Davis' daughters and of a visit by herself, sends messages from Winnie Davis and good wished for the new year. Also included is a receipted bill to Miss E. B. Tschudi from the Decorative Art Society dated March 7, 1890, a rough draft of a letter from Miss E. B. Tschudi to Stern Brothers regarding ordering various items of clothing from a catalog, a program from the Emmanuel Church Sunday School Christmas Festival, Sunday, December 26th at 4 o'clock. This program is not dated, but is before the present church was built. Other items include an invitation to commencement exercises, Union Baptist Institute, Lyons Halls, Athens, Ga., dated 1934 - card of Thomas Watson Norman enclosed, a letter from E. V. B. to Miss E. B. Tschudi dated January 20, 1896 regarding weather, Mrs. White's energy, measles, servants, investments, asks about Athens people, church and churchmen (with cover). Also included are an advertisement and brochure entitled The Churchman (Episcopalian) with cover and a pressed flower labeled "From Miss Winnie Davis, Nov. 1887."

Varina Howell Davis was born at "The Briars," near Natchez, Miss., May 7, 1826. She married Jefferson Davis in 1845. Howell was an intelligent, deeply religious woman educated by a private tutor and close family friend, later attending a finishing school to polish her considerable social graces. Her mother at first objected to the marriage with Davis, who was eighteen years older than her daughter, but the union turned out to be a long, happy one.
