The collection includes correspondence, accounts, and other financial records of Benjamin Temple (1801-1872) of "Berclair," Spotsylvania County, Va. Correspondents include members of the Montague, Taylor, and Temple families, and several letters concern African-American slaves. An account book, 1833-1871, concerns Temple's executorship of estates of Chowning and Temple family members, farming operations at plantations in Chesterfield, Middlesex, and Spotsylvania counties, and notes concerning horses and the sale of plantations in Chesterfield County, Va. Also includes a postcard, accounts, and other materials concerning Doctor Jacob Prosser Harrison (1834-1908) of Richmond, Va.; and letters and other materials concerning Eliza B. Chowning, Lucy Lilly Temple, and other members of the Temple family, some concerning African- American slaves.
