In 1942, Jim Kepner began the first Gay and Lesbian archives in Los Angeles, and it was incorporated as the International Gay and Lesbian Archives in 1979. Kepner was also responsible for establishing another Gay and Lesbian library/archives, the ONE Institute. In 1994, the International Gay and Lesbian Archives and the ONE Institute merged to become the institution it is today.
