Thomas R. Cornelius, Oregon pioneer, soldier and politician, was born in Missouri and came to Oregon Territory with his family over the Oregon trail in 1845. The family settled on a farm on the Tualatin Plains, north of what would become the community of Cornelius. He fought in the Cayuse War of 1848 before going to California for the Gold Rush. John Thomas Apperson, Oregon pioneer, was born in Kentucky in 1834 and the family moved to Missouri the following year. His family crossed the plains with a Mormon wagon train in 1847, but John's father died on the trip and the family moved to Portland. Apperson enlisted in the Rogue River War in 1856. He was a steamboat captain on the Willamette in 1859 and enlisted in the Oregon cavalry in 1861.
