Exploring Roman temple gardens : new perspectives from Pompeii [videorecording] / [lecture by] Maureen Carroll ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

Temple precincts throughout the Roman world were commonly provided with groves and gardens, but sacred gardens have rarely been the focus of archaeological exploration. Maureen Carroll, reader in the department of archaeology, University of Sheffield, highlights recent excavations of the temples of Venus and Apollo in Pompeii, which have now uncovered remains of the earliest Roman temple gardens from that city. These discoveries provide a significantly better understanding of the development of Roman sanctuaries and an appreciation of the role of the sacred grove in ancient cult practice.
