Images of Hippolytos and Phaedra in ancient art [videorecording] / [lecture by] Pascale Linant de Bellefonds ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

Pascale Linant de Bellefonds, of the Université de Paris X-Nanterre and the Centre nationale de la recherche scientifique, lectures on the many appearances of the myth in ancient art, focusing particularly on the problems of adoption and adaptation of iconographical motifs in various media and different contexts and examining some of their survivals in modern arts. Ancient mythology is filled with tales of unrequited love that could lead to tragic consequences; such was Phaedra's passion for her stepson Hippolytos. This story provided the plot of one of the finest tragedies of Euripides, and together with the Phaedra of Seneca and the Phèdre of Racine, it is has inspired writers and artists for centuries.
