Inside out, outside in : landscape, architecture, and the Getty Villa [sound recording] / [lecture by] Wim de Wit ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

Wim de Wit, head of Special Collections and Visual Resources at the Getty Research Institute and co-curator of the exhibition "The Getty Villa Reimagined," discusses the role of the natural landscape in Machado and Silvetti's renovation of the Getty Villa. Many architects working in California during the post-World War II era strove to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces, believing that domestic life should extend seamlessly from the living room to the patio. Such integration was not characteristic of the Getty Villa before its 2006 renovation. A 1970s replica of a Roman prototype, the Villa had elaborate gardens within its walls, but was shut off from the surrounding landscape. This lecture explores various features of Machado and Silvetti's redesign, such as the visitor entry sequence, the creation of windows and skylights within the museum, and the construction of the outdoor theater, that helped link interior and exterior spaces and redefined the Getty Villa's relationship to the Malibu Canyon site.
