Commodus : ancient or modern? [sound recording] / [lecture by] Miranda Marvin ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

Lecturer Miranda Marvin, professor of art and classics at Wellesley College, explores the sculpture Bust of Commodus and reviews evidence both for and against dating it from ancient times. Since its acquisition by the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1992, the bust has puzzled art historians the world over. Experts agree on the work's outstanding quality, but disagree on whether it dates circa the time of the reign of Emperor Commodus (second century A.D.) or from the 1700s.
