Alden Thompson collection, 1918-1965.

Alden W. Thompson, Sr. (1894-1980), served in the United States Army during World War I and in the Navy during World War II. He became Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction in Michigan and Director of Physical Health and Health Education in 1927. He retired as Athletic Director of Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, in 1959. The collection pertains to his interest in physical and health education, athletics and his involvement in the organization of the Michigan Sports Sages. Collection includes correspondence; publications; photographs; and World War II letters from his son, Captain Alden W. Thompson, Jr., who was shot down over New Guinea in 1943.
