Washington State Library's collection of Gordon Frazier Matthews manuscripts, 1930.

Biographical sketches of his father, Peter Matthews, and his brother-in-law, George H. Hitchings, as well as his own life and experiences in wooden ship construction, mainly at Eureka, CA and Hoquiam, WA. It includes the description of the process of shipbuilding during the early 1800's. Notes on construction of various noted sailing vessels and steam schooners of the Pacific Coast, particularly some from the E.K. Wood Lumber and the Pacific Lumber Companies, E.T. Kruse and S.S. Freemen. Descriptions of the 5 masted schooner, Vigilant, and a steam schooner, Esther Johnson (the last built) in Mr. Matthews handwriting and signed by him, added at the end.

The Matthews family was involved in building wooden vessels for many years. Peter Matthews was born in 1848 in New Brunswick, Canada. The family moved to Prince Edward Island when he was about 6 months old. When he was 16, he began a four-year apprenticeship to learn the ship carpenter's trade. After his apprenticeship, he moved to Perry, ME in 1868. About 1874 he heard there was work in Eureka, CA, so he went to CA to see if he could find employment. He did.
