Correspondence from Mennonites living in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Ontario, and in Holland, Germany, and Prussia, much of it between families and friends who emigrated from the Mennonite communities in Bucks, Montgomery, and Lancaster counties, Pa., and settled in Waterloo County, Ont.; together with petitions from the Mennonites to the U.S. government (1775) and Canadian government (1865) regarding their pacifist position; family papers such as estate settlements and genealogical records; and other papers. Includes considerable correspondence of Mennonite ministers focusing on church matters such as baptism, marriage, confession of faith, rules and discipline, church transfer letters, economic assistance, and church divisions which occurred along progressive, evangelical, and old order Mennonite and Amish lines in various communities (1860-1874).
