Taste for the antique : collecting marbles in Liguria [sound recording] / seminar led by Elena Calandra ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

In this seminar, Dr. Elena Calandra, a classical archaeologist at the Direzione Regionale Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici in Genoa, Italy, discusses the vogue for ancient sculpture in the Liguria, especially Genoa, in the 19th century. This "collectionism" combined a desire to demonstrate one's aristocratic heritage with the impulse to acquire art that distinguishes the modern concept of the museum. In preceding centuries, sculpture was collected primarily to be contemplated in private and statues were rarely copied or imitated. The 19th century saw an increase in the production of statues that imitated existing works. The lecture explores the reasons for and consequences of this increase.
