Religion and ritual : from ancient Greece to contemporary America [videorecording] / [lecture by] Jan Bremmer ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

The Getty Research Institute's 2006-2007 annual scholar theme, "Religion and ritual," focuses on the interrelation of religion and the visual arts. Jan Bremmer, professor of science of religion and comparative religious studies, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Holland, and the inaugural Getty Villa professor in residence, explores the idea that religion and ritual are self-evident concepts that can be applied equally well to ancient Greece, Enlightenment Europe, and contemporary America. He argues that there are important differences between ancient Greece and the modern western world. Bremmer supports his argument with select case studies, such as the Eleusinian mysteries of ancient Greece and one of the first comparative studies of religion, Bernard Picart's Ceremonies and religious customs of the various nations of the known world (1723-1737).
