Comstock family papers, 1889-1970.

A collection of documents ranging from an 1889 certificate of membership to the Military Order of the Loyal Legion to a 1970 membership document to the Tennessee Squires at Jack Daniel Distillery. Other documents include a stock certificate from 1893 from the Louisville Railway Company, a 1953 diploma from the American Society of Civil Engineers, a pair of certificates making Philip Comstock a member of Jupiter Rex; one from Pan American World Airways and one from Braniff Airways, a 1958 membership to the Propeller Club of the United States and a 1965 membership to the Kentucky Colonels. Three of the documents are oversized.

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864. Hayes then was elected Governor of Ohio and later served one term as President of the United States (1877-1881) before retiring to his home in Fremont, Ohio, where he died in 1893.President of the Uni...
